Village

by Robin Fulton Macpherson

Nothing flowed along the river-bed
nothing filled the harbour basin full
yet centuries of water weighed them
still, fresh from Flow Country, salt from sea.

Names had left the war memorial
but their mass pressed the granite to earth.
In sycamore shade, in the locked church
empty pews were crowded with daylight
